Miley Nguyen - Digital Marketing Specialist at Myer

Disclaimer: These stories are shared with permission from my mentees. Each of them kindly allowed me to share their journey to inspire others who are navigating the same job search challenges.

In March 2025, Miley, who was still on a student visa (subclass 500), received an offer to join Myer as a Digital Marketing Specialist. The company even allowed her to start part-time until graduation, before transitioning to a full-time role and honestly, who in Australia hasn’t shopped at Myer at least once? 😄

✨ What’s even more impressive that Myer was the first company she interviewed with, and she landed the offer right away!

🎓 Education:

  • Bachelor of Law (Commercial Law major) – Ho Chi Minh City University of Law

  • Master of Data Science – Deakin University

💼 Experience:

Before coming to Australia, Miley had 3 years of experience in marketing and analytics. She decided to pursue a Master of Data Science to strengthen her technical skills and follow her passion for data-driven decision-making.

However, once in Australia, her job search didn’t go smoothly at first. Despite sending out multiple applications, she kept being rejected at the CV stage, with only one company inviting her to an online assessment and another reaching the interview round but neither worked out.

In March 2024, Miley reached out to me for advice and mentoring. At that time, she still had over a year before graduation, so she wasn’t in a rush. But by October 2024, seeing how tough the job market was, she decided it was time to take action and that’s when our mentoring journey officially began.

Here’s how Miley described the process in her own words:

🏆

“Thanks to Chloe, my job-hunting journey went really smoothly. I started working with her in October 2024, just one trimester before graduation (June 2025). Chloe warned me it was a bit late, so we had to move quickly. From October to December, she helped me refine my CV (she’s super detail-oriented and fixed every little thing!), build my portfolio, and practise SQL and analytics tools like Power BI and Tableau. From December to January, I began applying for jobs, around 100 applications in total. I was invited to two interviews (Myer and Data School). Myer was the first one, and with Chloe’s mock interview and feedback, I learned how to answer questions more precisely. I also researched the company carefully and luckily I got the offer from that very first interview!”

At first, Miley worried again because the role at Myer was mid-senior level and required full-time work starting in March, but she wouldn’t graduate until June. She feared the company might withdraw the offer.

🌟 With my guidance, she learned how to negotiate and communicate confidently with HR, and the company agreed to let her work part-time until graduation, then move into a full-time position.

📌 As her mentor, I’ve seen how proactive and hardworking Miley is - she diligently followed up on every action item after each session, updated me regularly, and always asked for feedback to keep improving.

To all international students reading this - take Miley’s story as a reminder:

💪 Start early.

💪 Stay consistent.

💪 And don’t wait until graduation to prepare for your career.

Because your golden window to secure your dream job starts long before you finish your degree.
